Coconut

I had hoped to have photos of the Lee's new kid in this week's blog.. but it was not to be. Had a quick dash in and out of Melbourne over the weekend. Managed to catch up wif the khoo's but not the lee's. Time to meet up with old friends is so scarce these days... i suppose we all value these moments differently. Well.. not dwelling on bad moments.. i did have a good drive back from Melb....1000km drive and only stopping once to fill up and rest (personal best ^_^). Since i was lacking in photos for the week.. ivy suggested that i post our coconut adventure instead :-P

it all started with a nut

learning piano finally paid off... strong fingers ^_^

yup.. that is a juicer...used it as a grater instead.. hee hee

see.. just like a professionally machine grated coconut

ahhh.. final product.. beautiful and tasty kueh dadar

What's this kuih-making craze?

Anyway, good to see you. Next time, you'll see either one of us in Sydney. Let's do a camping trip too.

The car should be good for quite a few years till you pass 100,000 kms.

What car did you drive that has a chance of breaking down ? 'Less it's a 10 year old holden that is missing a tailgate ? :)

Looks like this stretch of kuih kuih making trend is serious. It's been a few weeks already and at the rate Ah Por is going, she can consider opening a psuedo Bengawan Solo in Sydney :). Hey, that may work. Think about it. Can call it BEN-a-won Solo...

There's a lady here in Melb who makes kuihs and sells them to the Asian grocery stores, restaurants & cafe. Quite lucrative, I believe.....

My sudden craving for kuih probably started after watching the weekly Food Safari program here. One of the episodes was on Malaysian cuisine and there were ang ku kuih, gula melaka&sago...

Besides satisfying our taste buds, I think the greatest gain from making all these kuihs is not the skills and knowledge in trying to make them right but in knowing how I (or we?) have taken things I have around me for granted back home. Simple things like kuihs, not many people will bother trying to make them back home because they are cheap and they can be found everywhere! But here, even my amateurish versions seem like the best kuihs around, at least for Ben and me. :)

Ah Por, I can definitely symphatise with that. Since I grew up in an environment that Chinese food and kuihs are only available if my mom makes them or when we come home to M'sia that once a year. Ah, but then again, I suppose now I'm spoilt already...with all the food readily available. Of course, rice is now a premium so need to eat more of the misc stuff :)
