It's ta cold/flu season and i am one of its victims. The weather temperature has dropped tremendously. Just one week ago it was mid 20's and now it is high teen's. I suspect tat's how i caught ta cold. All is well.. we managed to go roller blading when the weather was still warm and i tortured myself by fishing in a winter like night the following week.
On another subject, i finally have a photo of yyee's family. The last time i saw his family, his 1st daughter was only 3 months old.. and now there are 4 kids!!! Aiyaa
The path sure looked good on google earth.. too bad you can't spot pavement blocks from there. We lasted 30mins before we gave up....pavement block sucks for roller blading.
wooden planks are worse for blading.. sigh. But the beach sure looks good
Tis was all i caught for the night... the drive there took 1.5hrs. We spent $35 on bait.. and tis was all i caught. Sonny fared no better :-P

f/1.4, handheld without flash. (i just cut and pasted what yyee wrote ^_^)

That's a illegal size. Did you throw it back to the water? What was it? Was it caught off the pier?
Ooo... 85mm f/1.4 - one of my favs. Will probably get it when I see one on offer! Not sure if it was the best setting though. Would have used an ND filter and shot at longer exposure. Maybe play around with aperture so that it's not over exposed. That's the beauty of the f/1.4!
i think ta fish was dead :-P Anyway, i threw it back.. should be floating somewhere ^_^
Now on camera talk. I would have used a slow sync flash. You can never get a sharp photo at night of people without using flash. Not a fan of 85mm f1.4... have to stand darn far away to take a portrait/group shot ^_^
Yes, I must say 85mm is tricky to work with but for portrait (1 person) the bokeh is absolutely lovely, as good as if not better than the 24-70mm.
With the f/1.4, you really do not need flash if there's enough light b'cos of the wide aperture.
Actually... no need for flashes when you've got fast glass *and* a D700 :-)
So I tend to shoot mostly available light though this shot was tricky - had a nasty sodium floodlight just off to the side, not to mention the various neon signs (can't see those) and of course, that big blue Xmas tree in the background.
Ben, if you see an 85/1.4 just buy it - you'll never, ever regret it - I have it on most of the time, and actually use the Sigma a lot less now. I find it makes everything I shoot look good (well, to me anyways)!
Have you been anywhere near mexico or pigs recently ?
i do know the advantage of a small f lens... i do have a 50mm f1.8, but it is quite useless for night shots unless the object is quite still.
ah teng, i think the common cold is more deadly than swine flu ^_^
