Apa Ini?

take a guess.. wat's tat?

our valentine's treat ^_^

Doubt anyone can guess what the 1st picture is all about. That's my new lychee jasmine tea ^_^ Ivy says it looks disgusting. Funnily, it does not taste like lychee or jasmine... in fact it tastes like some weed :-P The higlight of our weekend was Billy Elliot the Musical... it was our Valentine's treat (together with some yummy jap sushi dinner ^_^) We had to struggle with the irish accent used but the 3 hours performance was well worth the $$. I am always intrigued by the creative props... how they are able to change them fluidly.... and the dancing/music was good too. Hope everyone had a meaningful Valentine's day !

Valentines Day is severely over-rated. Too commercialised these days. Anyway, good to know you still take time to enjoy musicals. It's been a while since Karen & I went to musicals. I reckon it won't be too long when we can leave both the kids home with a minder.

Have u watched the movie before the musical?

wah liow.. so fast.

hahah... valentine's day.. hmmmm... it was more like "Pai Tee Kong" for us instead. My parents follow this and so it was more food.. then wait up till midnite for prayers.. and alcohol was the past time....

Kaz said...

Tsk,tsk ... excuses, excuses ... NO present, NO flowers, NO celebration ... NON-EVENT.

For some strange reason, Valentine's Day has always involved a whole lot more people than just the two of us!

Hah! I guessed right about your tea ... though I must say it looks a little past its use-by date. Where you buy?

I can just imagine that scenario, Mich! Goyang kaki, minum alco, waiting for prayer time :P

I agree V Day is too commercialied. Me & Janet don't have time for it, as our elder son is recovering from HFMD. That day is also the Chinese New Year for Hokkien people and we prayed too. The whole we have to take turns to take leave & travel back to JB during V day week, in order to assist my mother.

Ben, the thing in the drink looks like a sea-weed. I also thought it is a creature inside. A mini frog? Then you said it is lychee & jasmine tea! where did you find the green lychee, weird stuff!

Ben said...

hmmm..didn't realize tat ta 14th was the hokkien's cny..life is too detached here :-P

wat in the world is HFMD??

the asian grocery shop has quite a lot of wierd looking chinese tea. gave the jasmine lychee a try... not cheap.. AUD15 a bottle..doesn't even taste good. anyway i have to finish ta bottle before i can try another and ivy refuses to help me.. cheah. she keeps saying it looks alive.

HFMD is Hand-Foot-Mouth-Disease. In common in Asia country but not in Europe/US. HFMD is a from cow.

Visited your parents, to show my father Astro again ... sigh. Thank you for the Ang-Pow. She told me your cousins/neighbour got it before, after eating beef-noodle

Anyone knows a BOSE's 4.5" Jewel cube speakers? Please comment. Thank you

Ben said...

Ah Yang.. you still can't get your dad to get Astro?? wah seh..bad salesman ^_^

Dunno much about those Bose speakers. Alan owns a set of Bose.. he might help. I haven't really heard a bad Bose speaker before.. so it should be ok ;)

ah yang.. how's your son now? hope he's getting better. my friend had it, but he caught it from melb last year. oh well....

Jun Han's father said...

Hi Michelle, my son (elder) has already recovered. During HFMD, he can't talk nor eat; our hearts ache. Thank you for asking.

Hi Alan, Do you know BOSE 4.5" Jewel cube speaker is expensie?

Ahem... hifi kaki now coming online :-)

Wei Yang:

You don't want anything from Bose- there are lots of speakers out there (bookshelves and such like) that cost less and sound much better, even if you have a pressing need to hide the speakers.

Just take a walk at the Adelphi when in Singapore - lots to choose from! There's KEF's, Mission's, JM Lab's, Dynaudio's, etc.

PS If got a bit more budget then go find the Anthony Gallo speakers at the 1st floor - they're small, cute and they sound reasonably good.

(hifi kaki offline)

Valentine's Day for Kat and I has always been basically a non-event - like Alan I think it's way overdone. But due to me being away this year, I succumbed to the rampant commercialization and actually sent my beloved wife an sms to mark the event! ;-P

Wei Yang, I know how it feels to have a kid who's sick - I hope he's recovered fully.

Hi Yiing Yee, thanks for your comment on hifi. I'm really in experience on this things. I chose BOSE, as I was told it really good. I'm afraid that I do not have the time to mix & match speaker & amp. I did thought of those home theather system set like Samsung, Pioneer, Sony, etc. But they are lousy, after owning a good car audio system w/ component speakers @ 4 doors & a subwoofer. The I realize the sound can be broken into several frequency and it give a very clear sound.

My knowledge on HiFi limited, don't know much about KEF's, Mission's, JM Lab's, Dynaudio's, etc. Only know JBL. Anyway, do you believe wireless transmission of song/music ... like Apple Air-port.

My kid has recovered. Thank you.

Hi Ling-Foong, how is your front loading washing machine. Is it good? I was told that front loading ones, has a shorter life- span than top loading. Is this true? But, why all laundry shop use front loading? Why?

Ben said...

ah yang..you are starting an appliance discussion here eh? ^_^

i didn't realize tat HFMD was tat bad.. no experience. Glad that Jun Kai is well now.

What are you using the Bose speakers for? If you are connecting it to your home entertainment system or mp3 player, it will be as good as any of those high end stuff. If you are like YYee who listens to proper CDs/Dvds, then those high end speakers will make a huge difference. Car speakers are more focused on high and low freq.. power basses and deafening treble ^_^ If you want your home speakers to sound similar to your car.. i am sure the bose will do just fine ^_^

Maybe we should start a discussion on songs/music..songs depending on moods, reason and occasion. And the most suitable speakers for them ^_^

On the "interesting" topic of washing machines.. i use a front loader.. so do my sis and ray's parents. It uses a lot less water and the clothes don't seem to tangle as bad as a top loader. But i can't be bothered to get my parents to use them coz they have to bend down to load/unload the clothes.. not too gud for their knees or back ^_^

Ah Yang, my front loading washer died on me last year. Of course, I went out and got another one :)...the reason is that I need a front loader to stack the dryer on top. Of course when it failed on us...Cat got really frustrated with it. Took a screwdriver to it. So that kinda made it unrepairable...So got a new one instead.

As for Bose...I know a few of my friends bought Bose...mainly the lifestyle series. 1 had the lifestyle 25 and another 35 I think. Sound's ok I suppose...not exactly great. I changed to a JBL AVR system. I think the model is 7000 or is it 2700...can't remember. Anyway, the sound is really sweet. Very crisp. Then again, I am not as discerning as YY...so I'm pretty easy to please in this aspect. I wanted something to link into my HD DVD player, so that I can watch movies in full surround sound, and Cat wants something to listen music with. So this fits us pretty well.

BTW, glad to hear that your son's ok. HFMD is no joke. Seems like a lot of kids here get it....scary that

Warning to the stereo- or audiophiles - it can get very expensive. I'm not too fussed these days. Like Ben said, it depends what you are using it for. For general listening and entertainment (hooked up to your TV), you can't go wrong with Bose. If you're a minimalist and have discerning ears then you'll want the boxed speakers. Generally, the better the timber the better the sound. Specs mean nothing. You'll also need to look at your source too and the amp. See, if you want to immerse seriously into it, it'll cost you quite a great deal. At the top end of things, the step-up is marginal but you pay so much more for that marginal improvements. Having the right balance between getting something decent and not paying too much for it is the key.

Happy listening....

Ah Yang,

Very sorry to hear about your son's HFMD. Hope he gets well soon. It is painful for a parent to see their offspring suffer

Having been there and done that, I can honestly say that it's really more about the music than the equipment. For instance, most of my listening (while in Malaysia) is done these days on my LS 3/5A's and a tiny 20W amp I cobbled together, playing stuff off my network music server.

To add insult to injury, every female in the family prefers the sound of the small system over my main one :-(

In this sense your state of mind, the music and finally your equipment do play a part (in that particular order), I've found.

Anyway, WYang - when you buy, try not to get a pair that has a "grab you" type of sound - they sound marvellous in the showroom (you can tell - pronounced highs, thumpy bass, midrange suckout) - you will find that speakers like these (e.g. cough Bo cough cough se) tend to be fatiguing to listen to in the extreme once you've got them home.

One last thing: spend money on the source, then the amp and lastly the speakers - I've found that the best bang for the buck nowadays is to be had from 2nd hand dealers but caveat emptor if you decide to go that way.

Very often i wonder what is a great sounding system.. or even what is a great looking digital photo. In the digital age, we tend to compare between different brands, design, makes... and decide which "toy" gives the better performance. In the real world.. it is seldom as exaggerated as the digital world.

I went to listen to a symphony performance in the Sydney Opera house a few months back and was surprised how different everything sounded in real life. It sounded so much more mellow and warmer in real life...it was neither sharp or deep.. seemed much "smaller" than the hifi sound. That got me thinking on what we are comparing a hifi sound system with?

Even with photos or pictures.. the digital versions tend to be larger than life.. digital will be brighter, more saturated and surprisingly sharper than the real scene you see with your own eyes.

Hi All, Thank you for your comments. Why I ask about these home appliances? I'm planning to move to Potong Pasir, as Saint Andrew school is nearby. It's for my children's education.

Ling Foong, thanks on the comment on front loading washing machine. I still curious why it failed? Front loading saves water, gentle on cloth, can stack dryer, but can't last long, can't add cloth in mid-way, need special detergent. Then why laundry shop use front loading? Please comment.

About HiFi, I'm thinking of Bose lifestyle V30 system (w/o DVD player) but it is not available in Singapore. Yiing-Yee,do you know any good & affordable AV receiver?

Thank you all.

Hmmm...Ah Yang, I'll let you know about why laundry shops use front loaders...when I open one. Don't think it'll be anytime soon :). Unless I move to the States and decide that I have better prospects operating a laundrette and speaking in unintelligible english...

Why mine broke ? Don't know. It just conked out one day and kept spinning on and on and on and on and on (you get the idea). That's where the screwdriver came in. needed to get the clothes out. Think the timer and program was spoilt.

Honestly, I found Bose to be a bit on the expensive side for the quality that it delivered. There are a lot of different brands that are now much more affordable, and produce the same level of sound quality or better. Actually, I believe it's all a matter of taste. Depends on what your own preference is, and what you like to hear. Again, I agree with Alan, don't splurge on something too expensive, lest you need it.

Ah Yang, Potong Pasir ? That's a lot closer to my place now :)...Wah, sending your kids to St. Andrews. Wooo...

Wei Yang,
I'm glad your son has recovered from HFMD. Erm, I think this strain is a little different from the ones the cloven-hoofed animals transmit. Anyway, it's very easily transmitted between people too. And we do have it in Australia, though not as rampant as in Asia. I'm wondering whether weather and humidity has something to do with it.

From what I know, the front loaders are more for water saving and the environment (energy efficient). I'm happy with my top-loader cos I like the option of adding/taking out clothes mid-way, and I'm unlikely to go the way of front loaders for awhile yet. My parents used one when we were growing up and it was constantly giving us problems. But of course, that machine belonged in the older generation :P

Joining this discussion a little late - sorry to hear about your son's ailment Wei Yang.

Kaz - Fisher and Pykel have this new top loader - up to 8kg which does not have the 'core' in the middle which means your clothes don't get ripped to shreds and also it is 4 star energy and water efficient (better than some front loaders!). I can't remember what it's called but I thought it looked pretty impressive.

We're going to get a front loader soon and its so that we can put a laminex/stone benchtop (as part of the laundry tub) over it (to fold clothes!!!). NO DRYERS for us! Ling, take heed - one of the biggest contributors to those black balloons!!!
